America watches as Japan struggles with their economic and agricultural infrastructure. Once thought to be secure and sustainable through any natural event, Japan is rethinking their position. Though our particular area of the country seems relatively safe, we do have dangers that lurk. Businesses in particular need to review their emergency preparedness and their stability for continuing to support the local economy during a disaster. We've seen hurricanes, tornadoes, snow/ice storms. We are relatively prepared for these events. What if there were a nuclear fallout? What about an attack on Fort Lee or Fort Pickett? What if you had no internet? What if the power grid went down? What if roadways were blocked? What loss could you have financially, as well as physically? Want to learn more? Want to become more prepared? Dennis Hale, Director of Public Safety, Tony William, Fire Marshall and Sheriff Dusty Rhodes are fully aware of the Emergency Management necessary to keep Dinwiddie moving. They ask every business owner to also be aware and prepared. Join them and the task force currently meeting to keep Dinwiddie County ... A Step Ahead!

As the Commonwealth faces a complete restructuring of Districts on every level since the latest census, Dinwiddie County and its agricultural neighbors will, most likely, have less of a voice on issues facing agriculture. As more and more people move to the city and suburbs, they are gaining a stronger voice and more representation. This makes increasingly important that we get more involved with our community leadership, our State Representatives, Congressmen and Senators to have our voices heard. Leading the way for Dinwiddie County will be upcoming tourism events that can have far reaching impacts on our tax base. The more citizens and youth get involved to make tourism events successful and shine a positive light on Dinwiddie County for future returns visits to our county, the more revenue we will see coming into Dinwiddie County and the less cuts will need taken from our schools and our county programs. We need community involvement on a wide variety of levels to ensure that the needs of our community are met. Key people who are always stepping up are not the answer, rather more people need to step up and meet the needs. Small steps towards a larger goal!

Last month I toured you on a small scenario that could become reality with the ingenuity of a few industrious entrepreneurs in our County. More and more I see young people with fabulous ideas for businesses that meet needs ranging from trash hauling to child care/education to craft shops featuring remade items from old items. The difference in these Dinwiddie upstarts is THEY CARE! In my chamber and business travels, this is a common thread to successful businesses. People like doing business with businesses who truly care about the people they serve.

February 2011 Edition - The Monitor

by Tanya Hale, Founder

2011 is shaping up to be an active year in Dinwiddie County! This year's Board of Directors have been reaching out to members on a one-on-one basis to strengthen our membership ties. Board Members this year are: Bill Collins (Citizens Bank & Trust), Janet Harrison (BSV), Theresa Crowder (Bank of McKenney), Sharon Yates (Dinwiddie County Public Schools), Debera Jones (We Care Transportation), David Hahn (Dinwiddie County Airport), Rennie Bridgeman (United Country Windy Oak Realty), and Pat Hood (Crater Small Business Development - Longwood). The board is taking the "We aren't about money, we are about people and business" theme for 2011 to a whole new level. Any business in the county is encouraged to join the chamber. Our membership networking opportunities are very diversified and growing.

The first Thursday of every month the Chambers of Dinwiddie, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Prince George/Hopewell are joining forces for a massive networking event to reach outside of our own community boundaries and extend our opportunities. The February Event focused on Strategic Marketing and had almost 40 attending. The March event will be held at Swadder's in Prince George on March 3rd beginning at 3:30 and ending promptly at 5 p.m., details will be sent to our members. Non-members are also invited to attend and can contact Tanya Hale 265-5976 or Becky Hammond 605-2581 for more details (cost for non-members is $10). Events are being planned within Dinwiddie County as well and we look forward to sharing our county with the surrounding chambers and businesses.

Reaching out and sharing is such a common thread that I see in Dinwiddie County. Our businesses and citizens are quite willing to share their wealth of knowledge and give a neighbor a hand. As growth continues in Dinwiddie, we would like to see that "Hometown" feeling continue...it's part of our charm! The Sesquicentennial is rapidly approaching and your chamber is on board! The opportunity for new businesses to be created, shops to be established and for Dinwiddie to become so much more is rapidly becoming a reality. However, together we have to make it a reality. We have to dream and step out. When we sit back and allow others to bring in the business or to create business and carrying those dollars outside of our county, it benefits no one. Let's get creative Dinwiddie! How can Civil War History and it's celebration make us stronger, grow bigger and bring more tourists in? They have dollars to spend and we need to introduce them to things they can spend money on right in our own community. So we don't have a bunch of hotels...open a few bed and breakfasts in some of the older homes currently for sale. People come to visit, they want to take a souvenir home, not just a squashed and imprinted copper penny! Civil War bullets, antiques, Dress like a civil war soldier photo shop are just a few of the business ideas that we can be thinking about. A coffee shop at the corner of Route 1 and Carson Road where tourists can stop, browse selections of souvenirs, pick up information, start a guided tour...these could be a multiple person venture! Need to brainstorm business and entrepreneurial ideas, call me! I would be happy to sit down with you to dream the next Dinwiddie Tourist Attraction or aid in developing one to coincide with existing tourist attractions within our county! (804) 265-5976 to make an appointment!

Our Sports Complex Brick Project will be sending information home with students in the coming weeks and we will also be advertising in the Monitor! The Bricks are a fundraiser for the new Sports Complex and the purchased bricks will be placed in the common area of the complex for all to see! January 2011 Edition - The Monitor

by Tanya Hale, Founder

Building up or tearing down? Recently during my studies, I came across a poem that mused this very topic. Curiously human nature is to tear down instead of building up. This is true in our conversations, our business encounters, our politics and in our own personal lives.

As a new year has begun, take a moment to review where you are. Do we quickly complain about the waitress who is slow to serve? Or do we consider that maybe she was up all night with her dying mother who has breast cancer? Do we complain about Eastside Enhancement Center being closed on Fridays or not opening until 11 am? Or do we remember that this is to save taxpayers money during budgetary constraints to keep our taxes low? Do we complain that our schools aren't teaching our children, all the while never entering a classroom to see what really goes on during a class and how poorly our very own children may be treating the teacher? Are we complaining about a response time for the fire department or EMS? Have we taken a moment to consider that most of our responders have a full time job and do this in their spare time because they love helping others? Or have we ever manned the local fire station or attended a fire department meeting to see what they are faced with. Do we complain about the price of a particular product or service going up and up? Or have we sat down and looked at all the hidden costs encountered by a business owner. It always amazes me how prices creep up slowly for owning a business and all the associated expenses. Are we constructors or destructors?

2011 has so many opportunities for growth in Dinwiddie County. It is going to take all of us to pull together as a community. As we held our first Chamber Board Meeting for 2011, the Charge to the Board was simple. "We aren't about money, we are about people and businesses." This translates to your Chamber seeking to build people and businesses in the county, aiding them in networking with others who can benefit from their service, their product, their expertise or simply their friendship and advice. Board members will be contacting members and enlisting their expertise in a variety of areas to better serve our members and our community. When we share our passions and expertise with others we become a more closely knit community of business leaders and a stronger economic community. Your Chamber Board has been charged with building up the membership and the community through contacts, networking and being informed.

Check out your Chamber's Website www.dinwiddiechamber.org for your calendar of events in the community. Submit your community events via the website. December Edition - The Monitor

by Tanya Hale, Founder

Dinwiddie County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade 2010 was a huge success! Months of planning and meetings culminated into the largest Christmas Parade in the Chamber's five years of parade presentation! Bands, US Army marching units, dignitaries, students, businesses, clubs and of course Santa Claus made for a lively day this past Saturday.

With the parade getting larger each year, sometimes changes and adjustments need to be made, both in planning and event day time frames. A huge THANK YOU to all the participants for adapting smoothly to the last minute changes that were made. Your willingness to adjust with a great attitude made the committee's job so much easier.

No parade happens without the hands of many volunteers and Dinwiddie County has been blessed with an abundance of volunteers and contributors this year! We would like to recognize and publicly thank some of our larger contributors to this event: Bank of McKenney, Bank of Southside Virginia, Farm Bureau Insurance and Jason Dean, Village Shed Store, Dinwiddie County Sheriff's office and Sgt. James Parker, Shockwave Radio Club, WalMart Distribution, Gerdau Ameristeel's Community Team, Smyrna Baptist Church, Dinwiddie County Parks & Rec., Whiz Bang Promotions, Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Fort Lee Public Affairs, Jeanette Bishop and friends, Dinwiddie County Airport, VDOT and their local crews, Charlie Haire and the Community Service Youth program, Dinwiddie Junior High Honor Society, Edmunds Waste Remove, Roselyn Stell and our wonderful panel of judges! There are so many more that we have not listed here, however their time and resources which contributed to the success of the 2010 Dinwiddie County Christmas Parade are very much appreciated!

As a chamber body, we look forward to this one major event that we have the ability to organize and offer to the community for a coming together for a common goal. What a beautiful way to celebrate the community you live in and a holiday that is held dear to so many. Special thanks to this year's Christmas Mother, Mrs. Diane Galbreath and the Christmas Sharing Foundation who reach out to those in our community, especially at Christmas to provide for those who might not otherwise have a Christmas.

Our deepest thanks to each of our participant entries this year who paid their registration fee and in some cases MORE than their registration fee as a donation to our Dinwiddie County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship fund. Every entry fee goes straight to the Scholarship fund, with event expenses coming from the Chamber's general fund. This year we were blessed with an additional $500 donation to be used specifically for scholarships. It has been our Chamber Board of Directors goal to raise enough money to be able to present three (3) scholarships to our seniors and with this blessing, we will be offering three (3) scholarships to Dinwiddie County Class of 2011. Scholarship Applications will be available through Dinwiddie High School Guidance Office and at the chamber website www.dinwiddiechamber.org beginning in Mid-January and will have an April deadline for return.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Dinwiddie County Chamber of Commerce Members and supporters for an awesome 2010. We have seen scholarships awarded, a Job Skills Fair presented, a Poker Run support our scholarship fund as well as the Sports Backers, and now a successful Christmas Parade. All these events and opportunities for our community would not be possible without our dedicated members and supporters. I wish all our members and County Businesses much prosperity and success in 2011! Our calendar of events for chamber members is filling up quickly and the opportunities for our members in 2011 to network and grow will be bigger and better than ever! Check us out at dinwiddiechamber.org and plan to attend our next Membership Meeting where we hear from the Sesquicentennial Committee , Wednesday, January 12, 2011 - 11:30-1:30 for lunch! November Edition - The Monitor

by Tanya Hale, Founder

Plans are underway, registrations are coming in and this year's Dinwiddie Christmas Parade will be the biggest ever! Floats, horses, fire engines and Santa in old time fashion! Bring out the family on Saturday, December 11th 2:00 p.m. to enjoy the sights of "The Gift of Christmas".

Each year since 2006 the Dinwiddie Chamber of Commerce has put on the Dinwiddie Christmas Parade. Each year our county businesses and organizations lend a helping hand in so many different ways. Folks donate food for the parade participants to enjoy while setting up and while waiting for the parade to get underway. Shockwave, a local hand radio group donates their time from September to Parade Day to make sure that participants are safe and set up is smooth. Jeanette Bishop rallies her car club friends together to provide sleek and stylish rides for our dignitaries. Many hands make light work!

As I reflect back over the last year and the organizations I have been involved with, I see a trend that is very disturbing and perplexing. With all of our social media and busy lives, folks seem to have forgotten the simplest means of socialization and advertising. . . volunteering. Volunteering has long been a standard staple in communities here in our great county. As a volunteer, you meet new people, expose yourself to a variety of different personalities and professions, all rendering a different level of education and common knowledge. I recently worked with a group of youth men who were serving Community Service hours in the county. This group was a good group of boys and were ecstatic to provide their assistance and input on the project at hand, as well as roll up their sleeves to get involved. When the tasks were complete and their time was over, a majority of the young gentlemen asked if they could come back to assist again next time. These young men should be an example to all of us.

The benefits of volunteering are so tremendous. We need to step out of our tortoise shells and become active in the community in which we live! The Chamber of Commerce would not have been formed had I sat at home watching Desperate Housewives and waited for someone else to pick up the ball and run with it! The Christmas Parade would be the politically correct "Holiday Parade" and Dinwiddie High School Seniors would not be awarded $500 scholarships each year for the last three years. Businesses thrive on networking and volunteerism, as each public / volunteer encounter affords the owner or company representative to tell where they work and to share a bit about their company in a more relaxed set of circumstances. The only cost....YOUR TIME! For our community members and youth...when you volunteer, you are physically active (not sitting on the couch or la-Z-boy!), you expose yourself to a variety of personalities and have the ability to share your own wealth of knowledge. You don't have to have a PhD to be wise! Truly, I have learned some of the most interesting things from high school drop outs (don't get ideas kids, times were different in their day). Instead of gangs, crime and poverty, when people volunteer (and especially as a family) they are more in tune with their own community and their own community is more in tune with them and with their needs. Communities rally around each other in times of need. Can you understand my sadness in not seeing our volunteerism in Dinwiddie at an all time peak level?

As organizations, it is your job to encourage individuals to volunteer. You should be taking a skills inventory of all your organization members and asking members to perform tasks that meet their special skills and talents. After all, we all feel more comfortable doing things we know (and learning how to do other things along the way to broaden our skills and understanding). ASK A MEMBER TO ASSIST. Volunteering doesn't always consist of a month, a day or an hour of your time, sometimes it's as simple as making a phone call! You voted last week, now GET OUT AN VOLUNTEER!

Don't know how to volunteer or what organizations may need your help? Call or email me to find a group or organization that fits your talents and desires! Get moving Dinwiddie! See YOU at the Christmas Parade!

for lunch! RSVP reservations to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or contact a chamber member today!
